At first glimpse, Juno might not appear to be to everyones taste – “An Indie film about a pregnant schoolgirl? Chick flick fodder surely?” – not at all. Whilst successfully straddling the indie/studio film genre, Juno also manages to be a very smart and funny film, with a great script and superb performances which deserves a viewing – even by men!
The quick plot summary…
When Juno (the main character played by Ellen Page) becomes pregnant by her best friend Paulie Bleeker (Michael Cera) she is forced to make some properly grown up decisions way before she wants to. Not wanting to abort the pregnancy, she decides to find adoptive parents for her quickly growing child. The film progresses, via a few twists and turns to a satisfactory conclusion. The soundtrack is great as well, and the songs from Kimya Dawson really fit the film’s tone.
Why you should watch Juno
In a similar vein to “Sideways” and “Little Miss Sunshine”, this film successfully brings great comedy and drama together is a way that not many films can. It might not be a full budget Hollywood spectacular, but its charms are obvious – the flawless and sometimes really heartfelt acting, its superb and tight direction, and its fantastic dialogue. They all combine to make a wonderful movie and one that will be enjoyed by almost everyone. Forget the first impressions – sit down and enjoy!
Why you should NOT watch Juno
The first part of the film is full of naughty words and quite open talk about sex – it is a 15 certificate for good reason! Some people also believe it glorifies teen preganancy.
Summary
Juno is a rewarding film that offer much more than comedy, and much more than drama – it offers both, and does both very well indeed. Its a great film, and is highly recommended.
