The JVC TH-G60 is a high powered DVD based home cinema system ideal for anyone who wants a comprehensive, low cost surround sound system.

With 1000W of power, and a full 5.1 speaker set up, the JVC TH-G60 is a comprehensive and good value DVD home cinema system suitable for anyone who craves power, but without the high cost.

The JVC TH-G60 actually has quite a lot going for it, the front speakers are full height which makes positioning them at the optimum listening height and position a great deal easier. The wide centre channel speaker and smaller surround sound speakers will be equally easy to position, and if you need to, all 5 speakers are	wall mountable. The simple square subwoofer is not too large to be awkward to position, but big enough to house a 16cm driver inside to add some bass depth to your movies. All speakers are very simple in design but yet remain quite classy looking, and the full height front speakers especially looking like serious pieces of home cinema kit. The rest of the speakers are equally good looking, with the front grille being completely cloth covered.

The main unit again looks quite serious with five backlit control buttons and volume dial on the front fascia. The JVC TH-G60 has a single HDMI output, but also a component video output if you need it – it will also upconvert to 1080p to help you get the most from your DVD collection. There is also a digital optical input so you can plug in a games console and enjoy surround sound from your gaming too, and a USB input so you can enjoy MP3/WMA/JPEG files as well as DivX/XviD.

What to consider before you buy the JVC TH-G60

At this price we can’t complain too much, but it would have been nice to see an HDMI input as well, which would have made it a really flexible system.

Why you should buy the JVC TH-G60

The JVC is a good looking and powerful home cinema system, but its the price that gets the most attention, and at well under £300, it makes a fantastic value for money choice. Rating: 4/5

The LG HT762TZ has been described as the 'champagne' home cinema system because of its champagne glass shaped fluted speakers, which in high gloss black look very attractive indeed. Whilst the looks may be 'Dom Perignon' quality, can the sound live up to the expectations, or will it just fall flat?

The LG HT762TZ Home Cinema System is the bigger brother to the LG HT462DZ which is an identical looking system but only comes with 2 front speakers and a sub-woofer, using virtual surround sound trickery to add the feeling of depth. Whilst the system performed very well, we couldn’t help but think that the system would have sounded a whole lot better with the extra physical speakers. The HT762 does just that, it adds in an additional 2 ‘tallboy’ speakers the same design as the fronts, and an all important front centre speaker to concentrate on the voices. The HT762 also adds a 10.1 virtual surround sound option with its ‘VSM’ feature. The system overall is an improvement on the HT462 with the extra speakers providing much more of an impact, and at 700W in total it can really blast out the sound when it wants to. The 10.1 virtual surround sound option is surprisingly good and sounds slightly more involving than the 5.1 system.

The DVD player is capable of 1080p upscaling and performs very well with pretty much every disc you can throw at it. The HDMI connection on rear of the player provides the digital connection to your television, and with its DIVX capable player, USB port and RDS radio on board, the HT762 can become pretty much the hub of your system.

What to consider before you buy the LG HT762TZ Home Cinema System

The ‘champagne flute’ shaped speakers looks may not suit everyones tastes but we rather like them. Also we would have liked to have seen a iPod dock on the player as well as the USB socket.

Why you should buy the LG HT462TZ Home Cinema System

Ideally suited to a larger room, the LG is a stylish and great sounding home cinema system.

At first glance the Sony DAV-IS50 looks to be the perfect solution for people who want a good sounding, but discreet home cinema system. But surely something that looks this good, can't sound that good...

Visually, the IS50 looks to have every box ticked. The speakers look fantastic, and for their size carry a surprising amount of weight. The rear ones are also wireless using the Sony S-AIR system which is a great feature for people with minimalist decor who don't want wires everywhere. The actual slot loading DVD player is a compact unit which will make it easy to site, and also looks very smart and modern in its gloss black finish. The whole set up oozes quality from the moment you open the box, through to its installation in your room. The only thing that does not look discreet is the sub-woofer, which is at 45cm high is quite large.

Connecting the IS50 is a simple affair, with HDMI and component outputs to connect up to your television, as well as digital coaxial and optical inputs to connect your console to the system. The The IS50 also works like a dream, and as well as playing DVD's and CDs, also has an RDS radio, which for many people will mean it really is a one-box solution to your home entertainment needs.

So far, so good, but can those tiny speakers on the Sony DAV-IS50 actually give a decent sound? After a little bit of fiddling about with sub-woofer position, the answer is a resounding yes! The small speakers, not suprisingly, sounded good on the high end and lacked a little in the mid range, but the bass was well catered for and the whole system went together really quite well. The picture was good too, and having the unit upscale to 1080p through HDMi was a real bonus.

Why you should buy the Sony DAV-IS50

If you want an all-in-one system that is simple to set up, good looking, and very discreet, you won't get much better. It makes an ideal home entertainment system for those people who are prepared to sacrifice a little performance for looks, style and those amazing tiny speakers.

Why you should NOT buy the Sony DAV-IS50

With speakers that small you unfortunately have to sacrifice a little bit of sound quality, and although this compromise is not as great as you'd think, it is a compromise nonetheless.

Summary

You can't help but like the Sony DAV-IS50, with its smart styling and cute speakers, and very decent sound quality. The price of around £500 is not cheap, but if you want a unit that does everything the DAVIS50 does, and with such style, we can't think of many other options.

[rating:4]

The Sony DAV-IS50 has now been discontinued, but as an alternative, the Sony HT-IS100 offers the same size speakers but without the DVD player.
